One code to rule them all

Courtesy of Pinyin News, I see that there are now more web pages encoded in Unicode than in any other encoding. Unicode is very extravagant, in that it doesn’t take advantage of the substantial overlap among, for example, different orthographies that use Chinese characters. Thus the whole character set includes more than 100,000 characters.
