Brave new world
This article by Avi Zenilman provides a nice discussion of something I’ve thought a lot about—how university teaching and learning will work in a world where people can be online during class. Clearly in any class you don’t need to be paying attention all the time. At the same time, though, if you miss a key point it’s likely that what follows will make no sense.
Perhaps we will all develop multitasking skills that render this problem moot ( although see this for the counter-argument.
My guess is that the short-term solution will involve redesigning classes to provide more ways to get back on track given distraction.
