Jim Stigler
Jim Stigler, of UCLA, gave a more personal talk than most, describing some of his experiences with Harold as an advisor. In particular, he talked about his experience in submitting a paper as a first year student with another graduate student without showing it to Harold. They received an encouarging “revise-and-resubmit” message from the editor, and Jim showed the paper to Harold to get his advice. Harold read the paper and convinced Jim not to send it back, because he thought that Jim could do better work than this. My students, who had not met Harold but came to the service, found the stories such as this one to be the most effective at communicating a sense of Harold.
