上有天堂,下有苏杭

Sinosplice | Archives | Suzhou: any good?

This is a great website about China and Chinese language and culture. I cite it now because his impression of Suzhou is very similar to mine, when I visited there about 10 years ago. I had trouble getting a ticket on a train out of Suzhou and ended up spending a couple of extra days there. The one high point was a great dim sun (dian xin—点心, “dot the heart” or “desert”), or as it’s called there, zao cha (早茶, or morning tea), with chrysanthemum tea (juhua cha 菊花茶), which I don’t think was as popular in Beijing in those days. Now it’s all over, and I even saw it for sale once in Urbana, Illinois when I lived there.
