On the road again

This week I’m travelling again, visiting Smith College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, then going to see my parents for Thanksgiving.

I’m writing this in the student center at Smith, using their wireless networking, courtesy of my daughter, who is a sophomore there. The student center is an interesting building, complex, comfortable and comformable from the inside. It’s not that pretty from the outside, but, as the picture shows, it has a nice solution to the problem of what you do when you have a very beautiful campus. The answer: use as much glass as possible so that you can look out and see the campus. Of course, this means you need to have the money to keep all that glass transparent. It may be premised on cheap heating as well, although perhaps glass is more energy efficient than it used to be.

A nice building and a nice place to work. That last is a good thing, because I have quite a few work-related items to accomplish on this trip, including putting my talk together for Tuesday.
