During my trip South, I walked across the border into Macao. It took longer than I expected, because at emigration there was a special line for Hong Kong residents and one for Macao residents, but foreigners, Taiwan residents, and Chinese citizens were all lumped together in one very big line. Then I walked about a quarter of a mile and there was a form to fill out and a line to enter Macao itself. By the time I got there, I only got to spend about 15 minutes in Macao itself. I changed some money and bought some small tangerines to eat in the line on the way back. I didn’t get a chance to penetrate to the older, more picturesque parts of the city, but perhaps I’ll get back someday.

The picture shows a market, but I didn’t get a chance to enter it. The lines were significantly shorter on the way back, and the wait was broken up text messages from people in Beijing wanting to find out the title of the talk I was going to give when I got back, and reporting on the progress of the experiments going on there. I’m still not that comfortable with the SMS system, but it certainly has its advantages.
