First snow

This is a picture of the XinDong (“New East”—named after the Hong Kong benefactor who donated it) building where the Psychology department is located, and the big bell built to celebrate the centennial of BNU. A couple of inches of wet snow fell last night, and many trees and branches are down around campus, but it’s always nice when the first snow comes.

I’m taking care of a few things at BNU and then I’ll bike over to the Institute of Psychology and work with them to figure out how to set up a computer to run the Qsort here. I’ve had a couple of people do the Chinese version and they’ve liked it. They have the same problem we’ve had with having too many statements that we agree with, but as I think about it, that makes sense. The problem in education is choosing among many desirable traits that we’d like children to develop. Ideally, everyone would learn everything and develop every skill. The problem is that this isn’t possible, and so the task that the Qsort enforces—deciding which ones are most important or valuable—has some ecological validity, I think.
