California trip
Over the weekend I travelled to Los Angeles and Irvine to meet a friend and collaborator, Jim Stigler, and to go to the meeting of the US National Committee for the International Union of Psychological Science, a group I belong to.
I sat next to Alan Kraut, who is the executive director of the American Psychological Society. Alan had been extremely helpful in making APS journals and materials available to students in Beijing during the SARS quarantine period. We talked about APS’ efforts to put as much of their material as possible online, and I pointed out that access to websites in the US is still a problem for students in China and other developing countries. He seemed very open to the idea of setting up some kind of mirror site in Beijing, which is a project I’ll try to work on during my upcoming trip.
